Colonial Fences
Fairfield County, CT is a very colonial part of the country. With many towns being established before the American Revolution. Consequently we have more than our fair share of antique and reproduction colonial style homes — many of them surrounded by traditional colonial style fences.
Early settler’s built fences out of necessity. Fences built in the fields were to keep the livestock from roaming. Those were mostly split rail fences made from chopped and fallen tree limbs. Fences built around the houses were to keep the chickens and pigs in the yard and the predators out. Those were mostly what today we call picket fences.
