As time progressed and towns grew, utility fences became fashion statements and status symbols. Simple fences with flat pointed pickets of equal spacing turned into elaborate ones. Picket tops became shaped, spacing and heights of pickets varied, and fancy gates were added — all in an effort to impress the neighbors. A tradition that seems to continue today.
